In più e più occasioni ci siamo soffermati sui System of a Down, gruppo alternative metal statunitense.Vi abbiamo raccontato, ad esempio, i motivi che hanno portato la band ad accantonare l’idea per un nuovo album in questi ultimi anni. Oppure, ancora, delle discrepanze tra i membri del gruppo. In questo articolo vogliamo invece soffermarci su uno dei brani più famosi della band: ‘Chop Suey!’
System of a Down: la controversa storia di ‘Chop Suey!’
Chop Suey!, pubblicato il 6 novembre del 2001 come primo estratto dell’album Toxicity, è uno dei pezzi più noti dei SOAD. In questo articolo cercheremo di analizzare la storia che si cela dietro questo pezzo, prendendo in considerazione anche le parole di uno dei membri principali della band: il bassista Shavo Odadjian.
Iniziamo proprio dal titolo del brano: Chop Suey altro non è che un tipico piatto cinese (molto simile ai nostri spaghetti per intenderci). Se osservate bene il video del pezzo, in alcune scene potrete notare il frontman Serj Tankian mangiare proprio questa pietanza cinese. Il titolo, originariamente, era però un altro: ‘Suicide’. Fu la Columbia Record a convincere la band a cambiare nome.
“Il brano si intitolava inizialmente ‘Self-Righteous Suicide’ e poi semplicemente ‘Suicide’, ma mai ‘Chop Suey.” Ha spiegato il bassista Shavo Odadjian durante una recente conversazione con Loudwire, aggiungendo: “Alla fine siamo stati costretti a cambiare nome, abbiamo dovuto capire su quale battaglia concentrarci perché ne erano veramente troppe, non potevamo combattere contro tutti. Ad ogni molto siamo stati molto intelligenti, abbiamo creato qualcosa di veramente interessante e oggi, dopo quasi vent’anni, ne stiamo ancora parlando.”
Alla fine, come avete potuto intuire, i System of a Down furono costretti a cambiare nome e, per una questione di assonanza, scelsero proprio Chop Suey. I SOAD, non a caso, all’interno del brano affrontano alcune temi delicati come le varie motivazioni che spingono un essere umano a togliersi la vita.
Nonostante il brano sia piuttosto energico, l’esasperazione e la tristezza la fanno da padrone. ll testo, inoltre, contiene alcuni riferimenti al cristianesimo e alcune frasi pronunciate da Gesù Cristo prima di morire come ‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit’ e ‘Father, why have you forsaken me?’
